Steel Magnolia's

Steel Magnolia’s is an American Comedy drama directed by Herbert Ross, produced by Ray Stark, Andrew Stone, and Victoria white. It was written by Robert Harling. The original Steel Magnolias movie was filmed in 1989. It starred Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley Maclaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis, and Julia Roberts. This movie is basically about the special bond that a group of women share; while they deal with different issues in life. As the plot of this movie begins to unfold you begin to see how special the bond between these ladies is. Annelle Dupuy is hired by Truvy Jones to work in her at home beauty salon. While working in the salon she meets M’Lynn and her daughter Shelby, they are preparing for Shelby’s wedding.  Clairee Belcher the widow of the late mayor and Ouiser the crazy neighbor are also introduced in the shop of Ms. Truvy shop. While in the shop Shelby who has type 2 diabetes has an attack. She quickly recovers after drinking some orange juice. As the movies moves forward, Shelby finds out she is pregnant and against everyone’s will she gives birth to a healthy baby boy. She names him Jackson Jr, In the midst of all of this going on Annelle finds love with a young man named spud. Throughout the movie you see the women going to various events together and sharing good and bad times together. Eventually Shelby dies due to her body rejecting the kidney implant that she had gotten. During this time the group of women come together to support M’Lynn and her family. Annelle also decides to name her baby after Shelby. These women in this movie were definitely delicate as the magnolia and tough as steel. This movie is in chronological order the chain of events follow each other in order.

This aesthetic choice contributes to the general effect on the audience, by letting all the women’s stories unravel at one time. It allows the audience to feel the joy, happiness, sorrow, and pain displayed in every scene. It also gives the audience a good understanding of why the characters react to their situations the way they do. Character development impacts the choice of storytelling methods because it helps to shape the things that the different characters might be engaged in. If this movie had been displayed in a different presentation style, I feel like the general effect on the audience would have been the same. The story line and the plot of this story is so thick, no matter how it is delivered the audience is still going to be rushed with emotions when viewing this movie.  This movie is one of my all time favorites; it is so inspirational to me. When I look at this film it reminds me that no matter how hard things get in life you do your best and defy and beat the odds. I give this movie three thumbs up and it is definitely a must see.
